Fire breaks out in Horsham garden

A fire broke out in a Horsham garden on Monday afternoon (September 21).

Emergency services rushed to the scene in Richmond Road after the alarm was raised by a mum and her young son at about 1.30pm.

Samantha Field told this newspaper: “My son and I have just had to call 999 as a neighbour had a fire in their garden.

“The fire got out of control very quickly and was quite frightening.”

The road was closed both ways from B2180 Hurst Road to Gordon Road due to the incident.

A spokesperson for West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said, “One fire engine from Horsham was sent to the incident, and on arrival it was confirmed the fire involved two outbuildings, one tree and hedgerows.

“Crews, wearing breathing apparatus, extinguished the fire using two high pressure hose reels.

“The fire was of accidental ignition and there were no casualties.

“One outbuilding had 10 per cent fire damage, whilst the other was 50% damaged by heat and smoke.”

No one was reported as harmed.

Crews left the scene at 2.12pm.

West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service has been contacted for further information.
