Fake fire to scare off pigeons in Horsham

CONTROVERSIAL pigeon culls in Horsham could be a thing of the past as a new ‘humane’ deterrent flies into town.

Horsham District Council (HDC) is the first local authority in the UK to use Bird Free, a non-toxic repellent developed in Korea.

Jeonjinbio, which developed the product, claims the repellent looks like ‘fire’ to pigeons and stops them landing on buildings.

HDC has completed its first trial at the Blackhorse Way car park and says the results have been ‘astonishing’.

Martin Rosier, senior pest control officer at HDC, said: “It is unusual for pigeons to completely desert a habitat they had been frequenting for years. I haven’t seen any thing like it in over 27 years in pest control.

“Even where physical barriers such as spikes and nets are installed, pigeons will typically still attempt to return to their roosts. It is not overstating the case to say that I am astonished at the results.”
