IT IS well known that exciting events such as Piazza Italia 2012, organised by Horsham District Council, are aimed at increasing visitor numbers to Horsham town centre as well as creating opportunities for many local businesses.

However it has just been revealed that the town’s annual Italian festival produced record footfall figures, also known as visitor numbers, in Swan Walk shopping centre in Horsham as more people visited the centre on that weekend than last year.

Horsham Piazza Italia took place over the Easter weekend in early April and on Good Friday visitors were up 25 per cent from 2011 while figures were also up on the Saturday and over 10 per cent up on Easter Monday.

Taken together, these figures show that around 15 per cent more people visited Piazza Italia this year and an on site survey indicated that at least a third were visiting the event for the first time, a considerable achievement given the weather comparison with 2011.

Helena Croft, HDC Cabinet Member for communication, special projects and Horsham Town, said: “Piazza Italia was a superb family event that was enjoyed by thousands of residents and visitors alike.

“The glorious setting of Horsham Carfax and town centre provided perfect days out over the holiday and I must congratulate the whole team at Horsham District Council along with the Ferrari Club and local businesses for putting on such a spectacular event.”

Gill Buchanan, manager of Swan Walk shopping centre, said: “Easter weekend in Horsham has become the place to be now that Piazza Italia is so well established.

“The event is a great advert for our wonderful town centre and its vibrant retail mix. Swan Walk was, as ever, delighted to support the event.”

Exciting events planned for the town centre this year include the Broadwood Morris Day of Dance in May and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Tea Party in June over the bank holiday weekend.

Also in the first week of June is the Sussex County Cricket Club Horsham Festival of Cricket, which is held at Horsham Cricket Club.

The Horsham 2012 Community Torch Relay, St Catherine’s Hospice Midnight Walk and Sparks in the Park Horsham 2012 – Caribbean Party and Rio Carnival will all take place in a busy July schedule.

In September food and music lovers will look forward to The Big Nibble local produce event and the second Horsham Festival of Sound festival.

More events are planned for the rest of the year and details can be found online at
