Despite the ‘Beast from the East’ and freezing temperatures, there was good support for West ChiltingtonDramatic Society’s annual general meeting (AGM) at West Chiltington Village Hall, with 40 or more members in attendance.
Naturally the complimentary wine was not the main reason for this thespian loyalty but maybe the ‘auditions’ for the new committee had sparked interest.
AGM’s can be nostalgic occasions and this one more than most.
The society made a presentation to two of their longest serving members, who were retiring from the committee, being husband and wife – John and Betsy Rimmer.
John had indeed played the role of treasurer for five years and then became chairman, steering the society ever forwards over the past ten years – indeed he will be a hard act to follow.
Betsy meanwhile joined the society, before her husband, and has been the guiding light behind the throne as well as being a memorable and charismatic performer.
Indeed both of them have been the mainstay of just about every production, over the past 16 years. They will be sorely missed but fortunately will continue to play an active role both on and off stage.
The next item of business was the election of committee which was as follows: chairman – Geofrey Steward, hon. secretary – Amanda Hislop, hon. treasurer - Mike Phillips, mem. secretary - Christine Pearson, plus Angela Sloan, Rob Pearson, Julia and Doug Yule and David Burnett. Hermin Daly will remain as hon. president and the vice chair is to be announced – we wish them every success for 2018.
The society will be undertaking two productions a year in May and November together with three members’ evenings and a number of play readings.
The next production on May 24, 25 and 26 will be ‘A Sense of Achievement’ written by member and play-wright Joan Trew.
This promises to be a lively comedy, with shades of The Vicar of Dibley, and is reminiscent of problems close to home as it is about a fundraising village hall committee trying to fix the leaky roof – disagreements and personality clashes at a brainstorming session await you – see you there.
