‘Diddy’ David steps in to hand out prizes at summer show

The 67th Ellens Green and Rudgwick Summer Show took place recently.

‘Diddy’ David Hamilton saved the day by stepping in at the last minute when June Whitfield was unable to attend as advertised to open this quintessentially English summer show and also to present the prizes.

Despite incredibly muddy conditions on the field, which prevented any car parking on it, and frequent downpours, many villagers with stalwart British spirit turned out to enjoy the Crawley Millennium Band who entertained everyone and there were many trade stalls, as well as the popular bric a brac, produce stall, plant stall, tombola and raffle.

The traditional games included a coconut shy, cork gun, skittles as well as the tug of war which was won by the Sons of Thunder team!

There was much interest in the Old Rudgwick Cider Society (ORCS) stall which had samples of this year’s cider brew, Old Chopper (dry) and Strumpet (medium) as well as Vinegar Witch cider vinegar all from apples pressed at the village Apple Day last autumn.

There were huskies this year and the spinning ladies from Epsom who helped everyone have a go at this fascinating craft.

The children enjoyed them, the Punch and Judy shows, the excellent face painting and the traditional games. The Companion Dog Show took place even though with fewer attendees.

The entries in the show tent were of the usual very high standard.
