Sussex authorities urge motorists to ‘drink or drive’

Sussex Safer Roads Partnership have encouraged motorists to drink or drive ahead of the warm summer months.

The partnership, consisting of the police, fire service and councils, are also urging people to take care when driving the morning after the night before.

Last year in Sussex, 126 people were killed or injured as the result of a driver who was found to be impaired by alcohol.

Recent figures show that there are more drink drive casualties in the summer months than at Christmas time.

Jackie Boyle, West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service’s community fire and road safety manager, said: “Even a small amount of alcohol can affect your ability to drive safely and whilst we want everyone to enjoy a nice summer social with friends and family, the best advice is not to drink anything if you are driving and remember to give alcohol plenty of time if you are driving the next day.

“Every year, we see people injured on our roads because they are still under the influence of alcohol from the evening before and through the Drink OR Drive campaign run by Sussex Safer Roads Partnership we are trying to inform drivers of the dangers involved and help them to avoid a drink drive conviction - or worse still cause a collision and injure others.”
