Police officers employed after tax hike

Surrey Police has employed police probationers after increasing its share of council tax by 1.99 per cent.

A spokesman said the number of officers employed in the force had increased by four to 1,944 from 2012.

Surrey Police and Crime Commissioner Kevin Hurley said: “In a time of austerity and budget cuts when all other police forces in the South have seen officer numbers slashed, we in Surrey have recently recruited and are training probationers who will raise our compliment higher than it has been since I was elected in 2012.

“We now have 1,944 officers whereas in 2012 there were 1,940. I am proud to say that by making it my priority to fund the things that you, the people of Surrey tell me are most important to you, we can better ensure that Surrey remains one of the safest places to live in England.”
