Man caught crossing live rail line in Billingshurst

A STARK warning has been sent to trespassers after a man was caught on CCTV crossing a rail line in Billingshurst.

British Transport Police (BTP) say ‘you’re risking your life’ when walking over a live line carrying 750 volts.

Officers have released images of the man caught crossing the track at around 1pm on Tuesday February 14 and are now appealing for anyone who may recognise the man pictured to come forward.

PC Tracey Searle, investigating officer based at Brighton station, said: “I cannot over-emphasise the dangers of trespassing on the rail line. People who nip across the track to take a shortcut and get to the other side rather than use the correct means of crossing the railway are risking their lives.

“Trespass may not sound like a serious offence but, in the unforgiving environment of the railway, it can be a major safety hazard.

“Not only are you at risk of being struck by a train, but also of coming into contact with the live third rail, which powers trains across the south, and carries 750 volts of electricity and remains switched on 24 hours a day, seven days a week.”

She added: “Those who continue to flout the law could find themselves facing police action. Make no mistake; if you are caught we will seek the strongest possible penalties.”
