Volunteer officers Heather Gibbons and Jackie Connor were recognised at the Sussex Police West Sussex Divisional Awards on Monday (July 20).

The pair had just finished their shifts in Horsham and stopped at the Royal Mail sorting office to pick up a parcel when they saw two men fighting.

They dived between the men while they were throwing punches, resulting in SC Gibbons receiving an injury.

Presenting an award for their outstanding bravery and courage, Chief inspector Howard Hodges, Horsham district commander, said they ‘showed great selflessness while off duty’.

He added: “I am proud of what you both did on that day.”

The ceremony also heard how PCSOs Charlene Parsons and Adrian Bell faced a significant risk of harm when they were called to an address in Horsham in May this year.

Without warning the female occupant of the property made threats to harm them while armed with garden shears.

CI Hodges said: “She also assaulted a constable. This was a frightening situation for all concerned yet they remained calm and professional throughout.”

The awards, held in Arundel Castle, gave thanks to police officers, PCSOs, volunteers and members of the community who have saved lives, averted disasters and put dangerous criminals behind bars - all while putting their own lives at risk.
