Horsham home burgled of ‘prize possession’

A HORSHAM man has told of the moment he discovered his home had been burgled of a ‘prize possession’.

The lifelong Portsmouth football fan, who does not want to be identified, was at Fratton Park watching the 3-1 victory over Doncaster Rovers before returning to his Orchard Road flat on Saturday October 22.

“As I entered my home about 10pm I noticed the communal door was open,” he said, “and then I walked upstairs and see my door open.

“That’s when I called the police.”

A special watch marking Portsmouth’s historic 2008 FA Cup final triumph had been snatched, along with £350 in cash.

The silver Danbury Mint commemorative watch is one of a limited edition made especially to mark the 2008 Wembley victory, which the victim had attended.

“I’m gutted, not happy, and wound up” he continued, “it wasn’t easy to see it go - it means a lot to me, just like anyone’s prize possession.

“I bought this after the game in June for around £200. It’s probably worth a bit more now.

The Pompey fan explained how the watch needed to be repaired so he left it on top of the fridge to remind him, making it an easy target for the thief.

“I really don’t know who or why someone would do this. And I hope I don’t find out who he, she, or it is, because I will go nuts.

The man added he could not put into words how ‘shocked’ he is to have become a victim of this crime.

Detective Constable Kai Murray said; “We would like to hear from anyone who was in the Orchard Road area that Saturday afternoon and who saw anything suspicious.

“We’d also be interested to hear from anyone who has been offered this distinctive watch.

“The loser attached great historical and sentimental significance to the watch, and it would be good to help him recover it.”
