POLICE are seeking information after a heartless thief stole cash from an elderly Broadbridge Heath couple.
The husband and wife, who are in their 80s, were in their ground floor flat in Sleets Road just after 12.30pm on Tuesday April 24, when a man called at the door and said there was a problem with their water supply.
He kept them talking in the kitchen while he made some apparent checks, and then left.
Moments later the couple realised that some £40 to £50 cash had been taken from a wallet and a handbag elsewhere in the flat.
Detective Constable Chris Mills said: “Clearly this man had an accomplice who rifled through the victims’ possessions while they were in the kitchen. We have no description of that person yet but the man in the kitchen is described as white, in his 30s, about 5’8” tall, with short hair and of stocky build. He was wearing a grey tracksuit with a blue motif on the left breast, and blue ‘ski-type’ gloves. He had prominent front teeth. No vehicle was seen.
“This isolated incident was very distressing for the couple, and we need the help of the public to find this man. If you were in the area at around midday on Tuesday and saw this man maybe with another person, we would very much like to hear from you. Please call us on 101 quoting serial 0616 of 24/4.
“Meanwhile, please continue to be aware and cautious about anyone calling at your door unannounced and do not let them in.”
Police have released the following tips:
•Attach your door chain before opening the door to strangers
