Haywards Heath man charged with explosive and terror offences

A man from Haywards Heath has been charged with explosive and terror offences.

Police said Scott Porter, 43, of St Josephs Way, Haywards Heath, was arrested as part of an investigation by officers from Counter Terrorism Policing South East, assisted by Sussex Police.

A spokesman said: “The charges come following an arrest carried out on Tuesday (August 25), in Burgess Hill.

“Porter has been charged with making or possessing an explosive substance in suspicious circumstances under Section 4 of the Explosive Substances Act 1883.

“He has also been charged with three offences of possessing terrorist related material under Section 58 of the Terrorism Act 2000 by detectives from Counter Terrorism Policing South East.

“He has been remanded in custody and is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates today (August 27).”

Chief Superintendent Jerry Westerman of Sussex Police added: “We have worked closely with the Counter-Terrorism investigators to support their operation and through this effective police action we are confident there is no current risk to the local community.”
