The two women were locking up to go home shortly after 10pm when three men wearing dark clothing and with their faces covered entered the One Stop shop in Billingshurst Road.

The women, aged 46 and 32, were ‘roughly pushed around by the intruders’, police said.

The three men then ordered them to hand over several hundreds of pounds in cash and cigarettes before making off in a dark-coloured Peugeot car.

Detective Sergeant Harding of West Sussex CID said: “Although the women in the shop were not badly hurt this was a terrifying incident for them and we are determined to track down the offenders.”

Police are appealing for witnesses. Anyone with information can email [email protected] or phone 101, quoting serial 1225 of 18/1. Alternatively you can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
