A pub landlord near Horsham who is celebrating winning an award for ‘Best Newcomer’ from brewer Marston’s has praised the effort of his staff.

Bax Castle, based in Two Mile Ash Road between Barns Green and Southwater, was named the southern region’s Best Newcomer in brewer Marston’s Pub of the Year Awards 2014 last month.

The annual awards recognise the best performing of Marston’s pubs across the country in categories such as best community pub and best cask ale pub.

Dave Stevens, landlord at Bax Castle, said: “I’m thrilled to be recognised in this way.

“Winning this award is a testament to just how hard everyone here has worked to support me and the pub.

“All my staff have done a great job and I’m delighted to be able to accept this award.”

After Dave took on the Bax Castle, he quickly became a popular figure behind the bar and around the venue.

Rohan Miller, head of leased operations for Marston’s Inns and Taverns, said: “With many talented individuals entering the pub trade across our region, Dave has done very well to finish top.

“It’s a fantastic achievement for him and his team, who provide crucial support.

“Through licensees like Dave, we are proving that a career as a publican remains a very rewarding one.”

Dave now goes forward to the next stage of judging against a further 18 national winners and six will be invited to the grand final where a winner will be given the converted crown of Pub of the Year 2014.

The final will be held at Hotel du Vin in Birmingham on June 5.
