The Coastguard and Adur and Worthing Councils’ Coastal Office have confirmed the discovery of soft sand in the vicinity of Widewater Court, a council spokesman said.

“We request that you keep your distance from this section of beach where possible, especially when walking on the sand below the high water mark,” said the spokesman.

“In emergency situations contact the Coastguard on 999.”

It comes after the Coastguard issued a warning yesterday – read more here.

Quicksand forms in saturated, loose sand which is disturbed by, for example, someone stepping on it.

The loose, wet sand then loses its integrity and can drag people or their pets in.

In some cases, quicksand can become so loose that people have been known to float once they reach a certain depth.
