Costume designer to tour with Houdini play

And now Houdini is set to dazzle audiences again in the form of a new play written and directed by the BAFTA award winning film maker Stuart Brennan and starring Harry Potter star Evanna Lynch (Luna Lovegood).

Bringing Houdini back to life is Fraz Roughton, 26, from Henfield, who as costume designer is responsible for ensuring that all costumes for the cast are realistic and - more importantly - stunt proof.

“Houdini is such a legend, it’s great to be bringing him back to life,” said Fraz.

“The idea for the costume is to keep it accurate to the period but we want to give it a slightly contemporary, sexy edge to work for a modern audience.”

Despite having such recognisable faces in the cast and being an intense five week tour, the costume designer said she was looking forward to working on an interesting story with historically fascinating characters.

“I’m fortunate to love the work so don’t tend to feel too much stress or pressure,” she said.

She added: “Although it’s busy and can involve long hours it’s very enjoyable and rewarding. I’m really looking forward to getting stuck in.”

Taking part in local festivals and West Sussex County Youth Theatre productions, Fraz undoubtedly has a wealth of experience to draw inspiration from.

Most recently she worked on a local production of The Little Shop of Horrors by Steyning Grammar School.

Focussing on the lives of the Houdini brothers, Brennan’s Houdini combines drama with live stunts and concept artwork done by WETA workshop, famous for its work on films such as Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit.

Premiering on September 9 in Stoke-On-Tent, Fraz is already busy working with the actors.
