Philip Circus (Con, Chanctonbury), cabinet member for housing and public protection, asked if there had been any progress in addressing a ‘running sore’ in the village and the ‘grief caused to residents’.

He argued that the owners of the car park did not follow good policy or even adhere to the standards set out in the national car parking code.

Chris Lyons, director of planning, economic development and property, explained that the owner’s asking price was ‘totally unreasonable’ at a Cabinet meeting last night (Thursday March 30).

Kate Rowbottom (Con, Billingshurst and Shipley), cabinet member for community and wellbeing, explained that the cost of buying Jengers Mead would take such a high proportion of their community funds available from developer contributions from new housing it was ‘just a ludicrous idea unfortunately’.

The debate took place during a discussion of the Billingshurst Village Centre Supplementary Planning Document (SPD), which was approved back in September last year.

However the final version did not acknowledge three representations in its statement of consultation, and therefore cabinet members were asked to agree to minor revisions to the SPD.
