COMMUNITY AWARDS 2016: Winners revealed at emotional awards night

After months of planning, nominating and judging, the County Times Community Awards winners were announced this evening (Monday November 7) at the ceremony at The Capitol Horsham.

County Times community content editor Blaise Tapp compered the evening greeting sponsors and winners on stage.

The Ariel Theatre Company Othellos were back by popular demand performing in the interval.

The winners in the order in which they were presented were as follows:

- Friend of the Environment: Lyn Whale of Warnham Nature Reserve

- Best Community Organisation: Pulborough Community Care

- Health Worker Award: Jackie Chipps, community nurse at St Catherine’s Hospice

- Charity of the Year: Auntie Val’s Kitchens, a not for profit community interest company, which aims to get people with disabilities back into work

- The Good Sport Award: Horsham Rugby Club coach Norman Blower

- Local Hero: Alex Mellor, PE teacher at The Forest School

- Care For Animals Award: Arundawn Dog Rescue

- Outstanding Teacher: Katherine Martlew, teacher at Ashington CofE First School

- Volunteer of the Year: Jenny Wright, a volunteer of 34 years at Cancer Research UK in Horsham

- Best Volunteer Group: Horsham Green Gym

- Best Fundraiser: George and Thelma Brown, who have raised more than £100,000 for St Catherine’s Hospice

- Best Neighbour: Tony George, who runs the junior Neighbourhood Watch programme

- Public Service Award: Trevor Beadle, who has worked in housing and leisure services at Horsham District Council.

- Special Recognition Award: Teacher at Holbrook Primary School Heather Clouden

- County Times Community Award: The Sam’s Dreams Team, presented to Caroline Greenfield

Sam’s Dream Team have worked tirelessly to support the former Youth Award winner Sam Hedger. Sam died aged on October 28 after battled with cancer since the age of two and a half.

When the cancer was diagnosed terminal Caroline set up the Facebook Sam’s Dreams to raise money for him. His funeral is being held on Wednesday.
