Collyer's medical student receive '˜daunting' application semiar

More than 40 first and second year Collyer's students recently heard an inspiring seminar detailing the often daunting medical school application process.

The hour-long session was held by former Collyer’s student and Associate Clinical Dean of Medicine at the University of Cambridge, Dr Paul Siklos.

He covered the application and interview process that the college’s aspiring medical students must negotiate to successfully gain a place at medical school.

Collyer’s head of faculty for mathematics and science, Dr Rob Hussey said: “Dr Siklos’ extensive experience offered Collyer’s students an incredible insight into the process.

“The session included how to make an application stand out by crafting an honest and individual personal statement, through to what to expect when called for interview.

“As an old Collyerian, Dr Siklos put our students at immediate ease, and a fantastically productive and active session followed.”

Dr Siklos challenged students to crystallise their motives for studying medicine, then covered key NHS documents, relating to practicing modern medicine and the interview process adopted by medical schools across the country.

The seminar also explored the necessary characteristics of a successful medical practitioner.

Dr Hussey added: “Not only has this seminar helped focus our second-year students on honing competitive applications, it has also inspired our first year students to pursue their ambition and turn dreams into reality.

“The students found the session to be very informative and were incredibly thankful to Dr Paul Siklos for taking time out from his busy schedule to offer his advice and guidance.

“We are very proud of our annual success rates in helping students secure places at medical school. It was a stunningly successful session!”

Deputy principal, Steve Martell added: “Today has been a fantastic opportunity for our students, who were intelligent and engaged throughout the seminar.
