Clerk runs 50 miles a week to prepare for marathon

A parish council clerk is raising funds for cancer support by running the London Marathon.

Ashington Parish Council clerk Karen Dare is on a strict 16 week regime in preparation for the big day on April 21.

“I’ve been on this programme since January. I run six times a week, which averages at about 50 miles,” said Mrs Dare.

Belonging to Mel’s Milers Jogging Club at Christ’s Hospital, Mrs Dare has recently taken part in the Brighton Half Marathon and Run 10k.

“I’ve been running for several years and taken part in many events, but the London Marathon is the one you really want to do.”

She applied to take part last year but was not accepted, so Mrs Dare is thrilled to be joining in this time, and raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

“I know a lot of people that have used the service for family members and that really touched me.”

As a familiar face in the village, Mrs Dare has been handed donations in the street by friendly neighbours.

People have been very generous.”
