Charitableteen to take on triathlon

Teenager Matt Gilliam from Ashington will be taking on a triathlon on Sunday July 17 to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

Along with friend Ollie Finney, the duo will be cycling from Ashington to Havant, then running from there to Fort Gilkicker in Gosport and lastly swimming from there to Ryde on the Isle of Wight.

The 17-year-old said: “I got inspired for my event through watching Sports Relief. I was there watching it with my mum and I thought to myself, I must do something to help. So shortly after, I came up with this triathlon.

“I also gave people the right to vote for a charity of five I short listed, and Cancer Research UK one the vote. I now cannot wait to get out there on July 17 to raise money for such an amazing cause.”
