Vulnerable people and those struggling to pay their water bills have received more than £700,000 in welfare benefits and tax credits, according to Southern Water.
As part of the Worthing-based company’s water metering programme, the service helps customers who have trouble paying their water bills find out if there are any payments which they are entitled to, but not already claiming.
On average it has secured around £1,700 for each household it has worked with.
Jo Fielding-Cooke, customer engagement manager for the metering programme, said: “We have range of tariffs in place to give people time to adapt to metered charges and make sure that water bills remain affordable for everyone.”
