Horsham-based highway services company Ringway is one of 16 businesses in Sussex to receive an award from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents last week.

Ringway, based in Horsham’s Springfield Road, took gold in managing occupational road risk.

Sixteen organisations from East and West Sussex have been honoured in the RoSPA Occupational Health and Safety Awards 2012.

Nearly 2,000 entries were submitted in total for the RoSPA Awards 2012 - a record for the scheme, which is the largest and longest running programme of its type in the UK.

Judging is still ongoing for organisations hoping to receive an award at the RoSPA Scotland ceremony in Glasgow in September.

The majority of RoSPA’s awards are non-competitive achievement awards, although competitive sector awards are presented in around 20 different industries and competitive specialist awards recognise achievement on specific issues, such as managing occupational road risk (MORR).

The scheme does not just consider accident records, but also entrants’ overarching health and safety management systems, recognising important practices such as strong leadership and workforce involvement.

This is the 56th year in which RoSPA has presented awards to recognise organisations’ commitment to continuous improvement on health and safety.

David Rawlins, awards manager at the RoSPA, said: “The RoSPA Awards programme provides well-deserved recognition for the winners and spurs on other organisations to raise their standards of accident and ill health prevention.

“We congratulate all our award winners on their success and encourage them to remain committed to safety and health, an approach that is well recognised to be good for workers and the bottom line.”

The RoSPA Awards 2012 were sponsored by NEBOSH - the National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health. Most of RoSPA’s award winners were presented with their certificates or trophies during three days of ceremonies in Birmingham last month.
