A TEENAGE boy injured while messing about with a spray can and a lighter told his parents he’d been attacked by four hooded youths on his way home from school.
Police tried to investigate but it emerged that the boy had made up the alleged attack to cover up for a friend.
Sussex Police released a statement confirming that despite reports of a “horrific” attack in Billingshurst there would be no police investigation.
A spokesman said: “Police investigating a report that a boy received facial burns from an attack in Billingshurst will not be investigating the incident after it was established that there are no suspicious circumstances.
“Police received an initial report on Sunday (5 June) about the incident that occurred the previous Thursday.
“However, an investigation had not commenced as, due to the victim’s availability, officers had not yet been able to meet with him.”
The boy’s parents reported the incident to police before he had time to come clean.
He had claimed that four youths had approached him at around 5pm in Station Road, Billingshurst, before blasting him in the face with a spray can and a lighter.
