Garden waste collections will be suspended during this time.

Householders can check their collection days by using the council’s online calendar.

The council says in 2016 it collected 40% more rubbish than usual over the Christmas period.

That’s hundreds of tonnes of festive food, party leftovers and gift packaging.

The council says ‘why not try to re-use your wrapping paper and gift tags this year? Salvageable wrapping paper and used gift bags can be put away for next Christmas or cut up and used as gift tags and pretty bubble wrap to protect gifts during transit.

‘Any paper wrapping or bags that cannot be saved can be placed in your blue-top bin for recycling, just make sure any sellotape and ribbon is removed first.

‘Please try not to buy any glittery or metallic wrapping paper as it can’t be recycled.’
