David Stevens captured the moment when the bridge, above the railway line next to the level crossing, was lifted from its position by a crane on Sunday (February 7).

The bridge will be reinstalled on March 27 before reopening to passengers on Monday April 4.

In the meantime, it will be refurbished, including structural repairs, upgrading the surface and a repaint, a spokesperson for Network Rail said.

Passengers have been advised to use the level crossing to move between platforms during the eight-week closure.

The spokesperson said: “As part of our railway upgrade plan, we are refurbishing the footbridge at Billingshurst station.

“The work will include structural repairs, as well as a repaint, and improvements to the bridge’s surfacing.

“The safest and least disruptive way of doing this is to remove the bridge and make the repairs in a workshop, before reinstalling it at its original location.

“We would like to thank passengers for bearing with us while we deliver these vital works,” the spokesperson added.
