Billingshurst garage blaze ‘believed to have started accidentally’

A fire at a garage in Billingshurst is thought to have been started accidentally, the fire service said.

A spokesman confirmed crews were called to reports of ‘a fire involving a domestic property’ on The Alders at 7.10pm on Wednesday (13 January).

He added: “Joint Fire Control mobilised the retained crews from Billingshurst and Petworth fire stations to the scene along with two wholetime crews from Horsham Fire Station.

“Upon arrival firefighters wearing breathing apparatus found the fire in the garage of the property and quickly got to work, bringing the fire under control using two hose reels and a jet.

“Fortunately there were no casualties as a result of this fire, which is believed to have begun accidentally.”

Firefighters remained at the scene damping down and used a thermal imaging camera to ensure there were no further hotspots, the spokesman said.

He added: “After liaising with the utilities provider, the last crew booked away from the incident at 10pm.

“Officers returned to the property this morning to carry out a reinspection of the scene.”
