Armed officers and police helicopter called to gun incident at village home

Armed officers and a police helicopter were called to a village home after reports a man at a property was threatening to harm himself with a gun, Sussex Police said.

Officers were called to the home at Warnham Court Gardens, Warnham, at around 5.40pm on Sunday (May 29).

Police said a man at the property was reported to have a long barrelled weapon and was threatening to harm himself.

“The address was contained in order to prevent any danger to the public and contact was made with the man,” police said.

At 7pm he left the address and attempted to get into a vehicle parked outside, police said. Armed officers arrested him.

A police spokesman said: “A man was arrested without anyone being injured and without any shots being fired, 80 minutes after police were called to a report of a man with a gun at a property in Warnham.

“The weapon has been seized and it is confirmed to be an air rifle.”

Police said Philip Lowe, 67, retired, of Church Street, was due to appear at Crawley Magistrates’ Court, charged with possession of an air weapon with intent to cause fear of violence, and using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour.
