Melissa Waddingham, 49, from Southwater, says she’s ‘no expert just a local resident that has a passion for our environment’.

After educating herself on the process of hydraulic fracturing - known as fracking - and visiting the protest site in Balcombe, the campaigner launched a Facebook page called Horsham Against Fracking.

“We are under no illusion, fracking must be stopped,’’ she said.

“It is already on Horsham’s doorstep and it will have devastating consequences to our environment, water, all organisms and our future generations.

“Please support this peaceful group and spread the word.”

The aim of this page is to have an informative and open discussion about fracking. She wants to hear both sides of the argument.

Fracking also poses a danger to her job as a truffle and mushroom hunter, she claims.

The campaigner has already crossed off woodland surrounding Balcombe potentially ripe with fungi because of fears the soil could eventually be contaminated.

An anti-fracking campaign at Balcombe has been on the outskirts of Horsham for weeks now.

But in coming months focus will shift to Wisborough Green and Fernhurst where energy firm Celtique is preparing to submit planning applications to target conventional oil and gas reserves.
