40 years of photos

Peter Thuring Silver To Gold offers a new exhibition at Petworth’s Arden and Anstruther Gallery (until September 24).

The show spans 45 years of Peter’s photography, offering a glimpse into his early days in advertising during the 60s, to his more recent exploration of special historical objects.

A film of his current project, the carving by hand of an 18th-century English table in his studio at Petworth House, will accompany the exhibition.

Peter has worked for The National Trust, the Royal Collection, museums, institutions and private collections worldwide.

Gallery spokeswoman Jeanette Nielson said: “Fret-sawing a farmyard from used wooden cigar boxes, aged seven, and taking photographs from the age of 14, Peter Thuring began forging a dialogue that continues to unify his passions.

“After studying photography and film at the art acadamie St Joost in Breda Holland, in 1969 Thuring moved to London and set up his own photographic studio at 5 Thurloe Square.

“Particularly engaged in portraiture and still life photography and working on major advertising campaigns and editorial, Thuring continued successfully for four years, living in Paris and Brussels before deciding to give it all up to pursue his interest in woodwork.

“A move to the remote West of Scotland eventually led him in 1981 onto the antique furniture restoration course at West Dean College.

“For 30 years as a woodcarver, sculptor, gilder and restorer of antiques and picture frames, Thuring has continued to photograph, capturing a particular quality in an object, or expanding the subject by documenting and detailing the specific processes involved in the working environment .”
