A little insight into what the Market Square area of Horsham was like back in 1914.

“Mr F.T. Barrington Ward, instructed by Mr Fraser Haddock, applied for the renewal of the license of the Anchor Hotel, Horsham,

“Inspector Clement Bristow said the premies consisted of the Hotel in Market Square and the Shades in East Street, connected by a long yard in the rear.

“Witness spoke to the structural detail and the proximity of other licensed premises.

“He said the hotel was rebuilt in 1900 since when it had been transferred no fewer than nine times.”
