Carnival spirit in abundance at 2010 Ashington Festival

Carnival spirit was needed in abundance in 2010 when rain threatened but the showers could not dampen the spirits and Ashington was awash with colour for its annual festival. The event was hailed an excellent success, with a large crowd attending to see the procession through the village, from the Old London Road roundabout at the north end. The Ashington Festival committee and residents led the parade dressed as cowboys and Indians, followed by scores of people dressed in an array of creative costumes, from clowns and gnomes to the Calendar Girls and story-book characters.

The Worthing Nutters played a colourful part in the procession, with their feathery masks and bright birds, while the 1st Ashington Scouts float illustrated group activities, including a camping scene and kayaking, and a group of women bravely bared all for a Calendar Girls float, with only sunflowers to protect their modesty. A flower show, fun fair and car show also entertained the crowds at the festival, which was held on Ashington Recreation Ground, in Church Lane.
