Snow: NHS Sussex advice

Advice has been gven by NHS Sussex in anticipation of snow tomorrow (Friday January 18).

A spokesperson for NHS Sussex said: “Cold weather is serious and claims lives every year. In particular, it can make heart and respiratory conditions worse and can seriously affect those in or approaching fuel poverty that are unable to afford to heat their homes adequately.

“The elderly, and those who are ill, are particularly vulnerable during cold weather.

“To look after yourself and to stay healthy remember to have regular hot drinks and at least one hot meal, wear layers of warm clothes and keep as active as possible.

“Cold weather also makes trips and slips more likely, especially if paths are icy or wet. We would ask everyone to be extra cautious if you have to go out during cold weather.

“We also all have a role to play in remembering the needs of friends, relatives and neighbours who could be at risk especially at this time of year.

“If you do have an urgent medical need or need to get a family member, friend or neighbour to medical help, please consider if you would get the right treatment from your family doctor, a pharmacy or a minor injury unit (MIU) or the urgent treatment centre, before going to A&E or calling an ambulance.

* Remember to wrap up warm if you need to go outside on cold days, especially with a hat and scarf.
