The man, a member at the club, collapsed on the golf course and died at the scene, a spokesperson for Sussex Air Ambulance said.

Andy McNiven, general manager at the golf club, said: “We had a phone call to say that someone had collapsed on the course, so a colleague and I went out there immediately.

“We started CPR and emergency services turned up very soon after.

“Unfortunately we weren’t able to save him.”

Emergency services were called to the golf club at about 1.45pm.

Mr McNiven praised the emergency services for their ‘fantastic’ response to the incident.

He said: “It was a very sad incident, and we are desperately sorry for the family of the member concerned.

“I can however take great pride and some solace from the reaction of my team, who responded admirably to a difficult situation, meaning we were able to give the gentleman medical attention using a defibrillator within four minutes of being alerted, despite him being well out onto the golf course.

“The support from the emergency services was also fantastic, and between us we managed to give him every chance, although on this occasion it was not meant to be.”

His two playing partners alerted emergency services and the clubhouse after the man collapsed on the 15th tee.

The man had been a member of the club for three months.
