Members of the 1000cc Club, set up by 36-year-old Andy Stocker of West Chiltington, rode from around the country to Cornwall for the event on Sunday, July 5.

Forty-year-old Steve Edwards, of Redruth, was diagnosed with incurable cancer in March just a week after being laid off from his job as a groundworks manager.

His dream was to meet and join one of the 1000cc Club rideouts to Rykas Box Hill – a popular bikers’ cafe – to meet club members but knew he would be too ill to attend.

When Andy heard about Steve’s dream he decided to take the club to him not only to make his dream come true but also to help support him with his NHS Ride for Heroes rideout from Land’s End to John O’Groats.

Steve said: “They have been absolutely amazing. The support that I have had through them has just blown me away – left me speechless.

“With the present climate. All you see is bad.

“And then when you become involved with something like that and people going out of their way to help somebody that they have had no dealings with before.

“It totally restores your faith in humanity.

“[Andy’s] got a massive heart and asks for nothing in return.”

Steve rode his bike to Truro where he met the bikers before riding back to Redruth with them.

Andy, who started the club which now has thousands of members, added: “I thought lets go to Cornwall and go to his place.

“Next thing I know there’s nearly 200 bikers turned up. In the end it was crazy.

“It was amazing. He was just overwhelmed.”

Steve said he hopes to spread the message that anyone with symptoms should get checked out as soon as possible.

He added: “Whatever happens with my own situation if one other person out there makes that phone call a little bit sooner it could save their life.

“I have to take something from that. If I can just help one other person it’s not been for nothing.”
