If the 48-hour continuous strike goes ahead, ambulance service workers that are members of GMB and other unions will strike from 12pm on January 29 until January 31.

Strike action has already been confirmed between 9am and 9pm on January 29.

Steve Rice, GMB ambulance chair, said staff morale is at ‘breaking point’ but the union has no choice but to consider the industrial action.

He said: “Never have I experienced staff morale at such a breaking point and that is why the GMB is calling an urgent GMB ambulance meeting to discuss the details of a potential two-day stoppage across the ambulance service.

“Escalation is always a last resort but in the absence of any real talks from government or employers we have nowhere else to go.

“Our A&Es are in a crisis and we took the responsible position by not striking over Christmas. This goodwill will not continue in the New Year. GMB members expect the current Secretary of State for Health to engage in meaningful talks to settle this dispute.”

This follows four-hour periods of strike action from NHS workers in October and November.
