The treehouse, which has been funded by the generosity of the community and a sponsored walk by the school’s 420 pupils, also has a swing seat which was sponsored by retiring special educational needs and disabilities coordinator Carol Phillips.

Marion Smith, headteacher at the school, said: “The treehouse has been a real community effort and is a wonderful space for children to explore, reflect, play and learn.

“It can be used by whole classes or just a small number of children during break and lesson times and provides outdoor, sheltered spaces for all year use.

“The adults in school are equally as excited about this incredible new space and we’re delighted to hear children using some lovely descriptive words when playing on the treehouse. Thank you to everyone who has been part of making this dream come true for our school!”

The project was kick-started by Barratt Homes who agreed to help fund the building of a ‘showstopping house’ on the school grounds in line with their latest Storrington development, Warren Grove.

Sussex-based trust The Hooper Downer Educational Foundation agreed to support the project which celebrates the school becoming a primary school.

The project then faced a considerable shortfall to reach completion. Marion added: “Our fantastic PTA (Parent Teachers Assocaition) and FOSS (Friends Of Storrington School) have once again surpassed themselves in their support of the children at our school.

“Their large donation meant the treehouse could be finished this term.

“I really didn’t think it would be possible to improve on our grounds but this treehouse, has done just that.”
