Southwater schools to benefit from new classrooms to replace ‘poor quality’ buildings

West Sussex County Council has chosen a firm to supply and install modular classrooms at Southwater Infant and Junior Academies.

The modules already in place at the schools, in Worthing Road, were described as ‘poor quality’, and Hull based Integra Buildings Ltd will replace them for £766,852.

A council spokesman said this was ‘fair and reasonable’ and affordable within the overall project budget of £1,899,390.

The decision was made on Friday (April 17) by Andrew Edwards, director of property and assets, and will come into force on April 29, unless called in for further discussion by councillors.

The project will be paid for using Section 106 contributions paid to the council by developers.

A spokesman said: “The use of S106 funds will incur no cost to the county council.

“There may be a marginal saving in revenue costs in relation to heating and lighting as the new units will be more efficient.”

Once the work on the new modules is complete, they will be included in the 125-year lease in place between the county council and the Academy Trust, with the trust responsible for all maintenance.
