The third annual Clear Computing’s IT School’s Challenge was held at Worthing Rugby Club on February 2, and 13 teams entered.

They included Forest School and Millais School, from Horsham, Felpham College, from Bognor Regis, and Durrington High, from Worthing.

The idea was to build a social media platform or mobile app for young people in education, taking into account the concerns about internet safety and cyberbullying faced by children on a daily basis.

Design, functionality, finance, security and marketing were the key words - and youngsters were given advice and support by mentors from a variety of industry sectors. They included representatives from Clear Computing Ltd, Scerri Solutions, NatWest, Brightec and D3R.

With their ideas ready to show off, the teams faced a panel of judges and had to convince them their particular app would be worth backing.

The three finalists - Forest, Millais and Felpham - fought a close battle before Felpham were named the winners.

Barnaby Hall, managing director of Clear Computing Ltd said: “The day was everything we hoped it would be. Thank you to everyone who took part to make it another successful event. The mentors applauded all the student ideas and were highly impressed with their knowledge on the issues surrounding internet safety in a social media context. We are already looking forward to next year’s challenge.”

The judges were James Constable from Nat West, Andy Ferrett from Brightec, Marc Burrage from D3R, Barney and Sheila Hall from Clear Computing and Jacqui Scerri from Scerri Solutions.
