A-levels: Tears of joy at The Weald

The Weald School was alive with the sound of laughter and tears of joy as students received their A-level results.

The Billingshurst school celebrated a bumper set of results with 88 per cent of grades at A*-C, 65 per cent A*-B and 39 per cent at A* and A.

Some 14 per cent of students achieved grades at A*, which was nearly twice the national average.

Headteacher Peter Woodman said the results were among the best the school had ever seen.

He added: “It has been fantastic to watch students as they get their results and see that their hard work over the last two years has paid off.

“Results across the ability range are again very good with our average grade per entry the highest it has ever been.

“Nearly two fifths of all grades achieved were at A* or A.

“Well done to students, staff and parents!

“The Weald celebrates its 60th anniversary in September and it is fantastic to go into this with some of our best A level results ever.”

More than 90 per cent of students gained entry to their first-choice university.

Among the success stories were:

Eleanor Schirn, who earned three A*s and one A, will study maths at Durham University.

Chloe Billingham (two A*s and two A grades), will study natural sciences at Cambridge University.

Dominic Fritche (one A* and two A grades), will study medicine at UCL.

Emma Weston (three A grades), will study dentistry.

Tom Backshall, head of sixth-form, said: “About 80 per cent of our students will go on to university with the vast majority getting in with their first choice.

“Whilst we are thrilled with our headlines figures and congratulate the students going to some of the major Russell group Universities, we are just as pleased when students achieve their target grades and gain entry to their course of choice wherever it is across the country.

“This morning was really up lifting to see that the hopes and dreams of so many students had come to fruition.”
