Looking for a sense of occasion? This 813bhp ’Stang will provide it
Old-fashioned muscle is all about horsepower figures – and the Clive Sutton-tuned Ford Mustang CS800 has plenty of ’em to boast about; 813, to precise. That’s double the original output for the 410bhp 5.0-litre V8 GT, which frankly sounds bonkers.
So how did the tuning company and dealer create those extra horses? A two-stage Whipple supercharger is a good base, teamed with larger throttle bodies and injectors. You may be surprised to read that the engine internals remain unchanged.

Our demonstrator test car also came kitted out with a full house of optional extras, shooting the price up from £64,950 to a staggering £101,735. These include a £3270 carbon fibre bonnet and other such visually arresting parts, and a £3117 exhaust system. Combined with the supercharger’s wail, the V8’s deep rumble and the gasping induction, the latter sounds epic.
The Mustang CS800 has performance to match. While it’s not quite on par with, say, a Nissan GT-R, it can be breathtakingly brutal. It builds and builds with remorseless, unstoppable momentum. The long gears don’t like to be rushed, but that means they give surprisingly good traction even in second – although you usually have to shift up before each ratio has really peaked out.
You won’t be shocked to read that this brute’s handling can be a bit wayward. A lack of steering precision means pointing the car accurately and getting good feedback will remain mainly unattainable goals. And while the slightly vague-feeling front end could occasionally tempt you into adding extra throttle, just be prepared to do some rapid wheel twirling when the back end snaps out.
Optional adjustable KW coilovers (£2928) help tighten things up, but the ride can be somewhat jittery on uneven surfaces. It’s more tiresome than remotely unsafe, and we’re sure any issues can be dialled out by spending a little extra time tweaking the damper settings.
Ultimately, though, this ’Stang is about brute horsepower, not precision performance. And on that front, it delivers. It’s a howling, roaring beast, and has immense road presence. That’s all you need to know.
