The SUV market is white hot at the best of times – and these are the best of times – but one segment that’s going to be the next battleground is that of the electric SUV. Tesla has already thrown down the expensive gauntlet that is the Model X, and now Jaguar has met that challenge with its own all-electric premium SUV.
This is a sector that most people weren’t even thinking would exist a decade ago, yet here we are, with a mainstream motor manufacturer, a premium one at that, bringing to market a big vehicle that has no diesel, no petrol, no hybrid, just pure electric power.

That makes it no slouch either, with 395bhp on tap for instant and urgent grunt. And in theory at least it should have a range of a whisker under 300 miles, so there shouldn’t be any reason to stress with your range anxiety.
Even so, with 80% charge possible within an hour it’s not exactly as handy as filling up with unleaded, but it’s not totally impractical either – particularly for those who can charge it up overnight. And really how many people need a daily range of 300 miles?
The batteries are stored low in the ‘skateboard’ chassis, so the centre of gravity is low and there is plenty of space inside that has been liberated by getting rid of the engine and gearbox. It’s definitely spacious in there, with a big boot and that proper Jaguar premium feel. Unlike BMW, Jaguar didn’t feel the need to go all futuristic with its electric vehicle, it’s just reassuringly upmarket.
