Tesla has officially revealed details of the capabilities of its first mass market car – the Model 3.

Interest and speculation around the smaller Tesla has been huge and with production expected to begin in July the electric vehicle manufacturer has finally gone public with its specifications.

The BMW 3 Series rival will do the 0-60mph run in 5.6 seconds and, according to Tesla, will cover 215 miles on a single charge. That’s less than the bigger Model S or the official figure for the current mainstream range champion the Renault Zoe (250 miles) but still a useful distance for most drivers.

Like the Model S, it will feature Tesla’s full self-driving technology which packages all the hardware Tesla says you’ll need for you car to be completely self-driving on top of the existing Enhanced Autopilot system.

Tesla is still being sketchy on further equipment details but has confirmed that the Model 3 will feature a single 15-inch central touchscreen. Spy shots of the interior show this in a more usual landscape position rather than the Model S’s 17-inch portrait system. It’ll also have the option of a glass roof and 18- or 19-inch alloys.

The five-seat Model 3 will make do with standard coil suspension rather than the trick air system in its big brother and has a relatively meagre 396-litre boot, according to Tesla’s product website. Telsa also says that the Model 3 will offer “five-star safety” for occupants.

The Model 3 is primed to take on the likes of BMW’s 3 Series and Mercedes’ C Class in the compact executive sector. Production begins this year but Tesla is warning that cars ordered now won’t be with owners until mid-2018 due to the weight of pre-orders, rumoured to be as high as 400,000.

There’s still no firm word on pricing with the UK site quoting the $35,000 starting price in the US.
