This crossover shows class.

We’ve seen this engine before, the three-cylinder 1.2-litre unit doing sterling work across many of the PSA brands. However, the rest of this entry-level 3008 we haven’t seen before. This is Peugeot’s way of turning an MPV into an SUV/crossover thing, in a move which very much hits the zeitgeist.

The 3008 is a five-seater so you might imagine a 1200cc engine would struggle a bit. It doesn’t, and it can get up to speed without being thrashed. The 129bhp from the turbocharged triple is adequate for most tasks, although if you’re looking for something to carry heavy loads or regularly take five people we’d recommend looking at the diesel engines in the range.

There is a six-speed auto gearbox as an option but the standard six-speed manual has well-judged ratios so you can cruise along at low revs, saving fuel and keeping the noise down.

The Peugeot hums along nicely in a way you might not expect from a relatively tall vehicle. One oddity is the steering wheel, which is not only not round but also attached to a very quick steering rack. Tall vehicle, fast steering – that’s not a great idea, usually, but actually it’s fine in the 3008 once you’ve got used to it.

The ride is pretty French, so it does float over many irritations but bigger obstacles will make themselves heard and felt in the cabin. And it’s the cabin which is the real highlight of the new 3008.

There’s a lot of tech in there, starting with a 12.3in digital configurable display in front of the driver. The i-Cockpit is impressive, being both sharp and handsome, and it’s joined by an 8.0in touchscreen in the middle. This is standard across the range which is impressive. There’s also auto emergency braking, dual-zone climate control and rear parking sensors as standard, even on this entry-level vehicle.


The cabin really is different, modern and a thoroughly nice place to be. There’s plenty of room and you can fold down the rear seats and front passenger seat if you need to carry anything extra-long, like a giraffe.

This base model can better 40mpg and will be feisty enough for most situations. We think it makes a very good entry point into the new 3008, itself a refreshing rethink of an established vehicle. The cabin is terrific, the whole vehicle looks handsome and different, and it ticks a lot of boxes. Nice job.
