£41k Audi/BMW rival offers up to 360bhp, arrives second half of 2017

The Kia brand has blossomed over recent years. If you’re looking for everyday transportation the Korean company’s range offers plenty of good options – but even the most ardent fan would accept that they’re a head, rather than heart, choice.

That’s all about to change with the 2017 Detroit motor show unveil of the Stinger. Due on sale in the UK this October, six years after it was first trailed in the form of a GT concept, the five-door, five-seat car will come with one of two petrol engines: a 252bhp turbocharged 2.0-litre, or an Audi S5-trumping 360bhp twin-turbocharged 3.3-litre V6 petrol in the GT model. This is claimed to deliver a 5.1-second 0-62mph time and a top speed of 167mph.

A diesel-engined Stinger will be released next year.

Built with a majority percentage of lightweight high-strength steels, the Stinger is touted as a “nimble and fast” car that also delivers luxury and low noise. Significantly, rear-wheel drive is the default setup with the option of four-wheel drive on either version. An eight-speed automatic gearbox is standard, with five different driving modes – Personal, Eco, Sport, Comfort and Smart – incorporating a facility to adjust suspension settings for different conditions.

Safety tech includes Forward Collision Assistance, Kia’s variant of automatic emergency braking (AEB), plus a driver fatigue monitor, rear cross traffic alert, lane keeping assistance, adaptive cruise control, a seven-inch touchscreen infotainment system, head-up display, wireless smartphone charging pad and Bluetooth connectivity.

There’s no specific info on pricing yet, but we reckon it will start at around £38,000 for the 2.0, undercutting equivalent rivals from Audi and BMW. The 3.3-litre Stinger GT will be first in UK showroooms, at around £41,000.
