Shops have reopened in England today (June 15), following the government announcement that non-essential retailers could welcome customers again.

The Middy has launched a campaign urging people to #supportlocal independent shops.

Mrs Davies said: “The Covid19 pandemic has been one of the most significant and challenging situations the country has experienced for decades.

“There has very sadly been loss of life and I’m sure we all know someone – a family member, a friend, a colleague – who has been affected. My thoughts go out to them.

“But through this I have seen many wonderful and selfless acts by residents in our wonderful Mid Sussex community, who have demonstrated the true meaning of ‘love thy neighbour’.

“Economically, it’s been really tough for people in hospitality and retail and it will stay that way for a time. Yet many local businesses have adapted and really come into their own as takeaways, pop up shops in pubs and going bigger on online.

“Now, with the Covid 19 Recovery Plan ramping up and we move to reopen more shops and public facing businesses, it’s a great chance to ‘love our locals’, by supporting our unique independent shops and help local businesses to bounce back and thrive.”

She urged people to observe social distancing and recognise that our shopping experience will be different.

“We all need to have that little bit of extra patience as both businesses and their customers adapt to these new ways of working – I’m definitely looking forward to supporting more of our small, local independent shops in their re-openings and getting back to the hairdressers!” she added.

“It is an exciting time for us to back our local high streets and I will certainly make sure I stay local and shop local and be part of the revival - please join me!”
