Sushma Windsor, of Billingshurst’s Lettuce Flowers, was named as a Green Apple Environment business award winner this month and will find out whether she has won a gold, silver, or bronze at the award ceremony in November.

The business creates liveable, edible floral arrangements for corporate events and weddings, and aims to be a sustainable alternative to the cut flower industry, which Sushma says causes great environmental damage in countries like Kenya, where flowers are grown for the UK market.

Sushma said: “It’s such an honour to receive the recognition of such an established awards scheme as the Green Apple awards.

“I’ve poured my heart and soul into Lettuce Flowers and have had a very positive response, but the company is still in its infancy, so the award is particularly gratifying.

Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do at Lettuce Flowers. From our plants and the way they are grown to the containers we plant them in and the transport we use, we’re always looking for ways to limit our environmental footprint.

“Our displays are every bit as beautiful as the kind of thing a florist would produce, but they go on living long after the event they were created for.”

Sushma’s background was originally in the clothing industry, and she has transferred her skills from making sustainable clothing to her floral displays.

The original idea for the business bloomed from an idea to use wild flowers for a floral display at her own wedding in 2009.

The company supports local nurseries by using plants grown within a 35 mile radius of Billingshurst, with all Lettuce Flowers’ displays and arrangements using edible plants, including herbs, edible flowers and, of course, lettuces.
