Developer spinning tales for primary school children during storytelling week

A house builder set to bring 135 homes to Broadbridge Heath visited a village school to mark National Storytelling Week.

David Wilson Homes (DWH), which has full planning permission to build part of the 963 homes that will make up ‘Wickhurst Green’ south of the village, arranged for a professional storyteller to entertain 110 pupils at Shelley Primary School.

As part of David Wilson Homes’ on-going Educational Programme, Shelley Primary School hosted special sessions where the Reception and Year 1 and 2 pupils let their imaginations take over as they were enchanted by tales told by Professional Storyteller, Martin Hunka.

David Bird, headteacher at Shelley Primary School, said: “The children loved the storytelling sessions and our thanks goes to David Wilson Homes for organising the activity.

“Storytelling allows young people’s imaginations to run wild and it has been a real treat for our pupils who listened intently to Martin’s stories which came from all over the world.

“Reading and listening to stories are excellent ways to advance a child’s learning ability and in some cases can help to improve behaviour too.”

Paul Crispin, managing director for DWH Southern, added: “As part of our on-going education programme, we actively promote learning experiences with schools located close to our new homes developments.

“Family homes are at the heart of our new development Wickhurst Green, so we hope the campaign will encourage storytelling and reading to become a key part of family life in our new homes.”

“Storytelling is a great way to enrich lives and strengthen communication for young people today, taking us back to more traditional methods of engaging with one another,” storyteller Martin Hunka explained.

“It’s great to see companies like David Wilson Homes getting involved in the promotion of storytelling, encouraging more children to benefit from such valuable experiences.”
