Covers Horsham depot shows off green credentials

A HORSHAM timber and builders merchants has laid claim to being one of the most environmentally friendly facilities of its kind.

The new Covers depot on Foundry Lane, which opened for business on March 12, has a warehouse that boasts 200 photovoltaic panels on a specially insulated roof, state-of-the art air source heat pumps and built-in water saving technology.

The building has been designed to let in 18 per cent natural light to minimise energy consumption – and when the lights are required they are linked to a fully automated, individually controlled switching system.

All of the timber used in the development has been locally sourced and concrete from the site was recycled.

Henry Green, Cover’s commercial director, said: “As a company we are committed to minimising our environmental footprint and we wanted to reflect that in the construction of this fantastic new depot. As a local independent company we pride ourselves in setting an example for the building and construction industry.”

Martyn Abbott, director at design specialists NASH and Partners, added: “The Foundry Lane site sets new standards in energy efficiency for a builders yard. We are delighted to have been able to incorporate so many energy efficient features which will go a long way towards reducing the environmental impact of the depot.”

Other green measures included waterless urinals and bicycle racks and on-site showering to encourage staff to cycle to work.
