The clothing and food retailer revealed on Tuesday (November 8) it was closing some of its clothing and home stores to build a more ‘sustainable business’.

National newspapers The Mirror and The Daily Mail have released a list of stores today (November 14) they say may be closing following the retailer’s announcement.

On its websites both have said retail analysts Local Data Company had identified the stores which were most vulnerable. The information is based on towns and cities which have two or more Marks and Spencer stores, which includes Chichester where there are currently three.

The full list of closures has not been revealed by the retailer.

Marks and Spencer said it had completed a “forensic review” of its estate both in the UK and across the globe and would be reducing 60 of its clothing and home stores over the next five years.

Chief Executive Steve Rowe said: “Our aim is to build a sustainable business which will delight our customers, provide a robust foundation for future growth and deliver value for our shareholders in the long term. We have made good progress on our plans and customers are already noticing a difference, particularly in Clothing & Home.”

A spokesperson for Marks and Spencer said 30 stores were confirmed to close while 45 were being converted or downsized to Simply Food stores.

The spokesman added: “The list that has appeared in the Daily Mail is pure speculation. It is not based on any M&S data and we have not published any locations.

“What we have done is outlined plans to improve our store estate over the next five years which include opening 200 new food stores and selling clothing and home from 60 fewer stores.”
